Sydney Olympic Park

Homebush Bay

Used colloquially as a metonym for Stadium Australia, as well as the Olympic Park percent as a whole. Sydney Olympic Park is a large sports and entertainment complex in the West of Sydney, also an official suburb of Sydney. The area was redeveloped for the 2000 Olympics. The area was originally part of the suburb of Homebush Bay, but was designated a suburb in it's own right in 2009.

With the successful completion of the 2000 Olympics, Sydney Olympic Park has undergone a significant amount of redevelopment work to support it's conversion to a multipurpose facility. But unfortunately, the area is now becoming a canyon of high-rise buildings with small laneways as roads.  The ferry terminal from what I can see, has no parking space. The small park is now gone, replaced with a school that has no playground and resembles what looks like a prison.

Discobolus. A discus-thrower in ancient Greece. Origin. Early 18th century: via Latin from Greek diskobolos, from disks 'discus' +-bolos'-throwing' (from ballein' to throw')

The last time I photographed this scene, the sculpture was on a large open space with plenty of grass just after the Olympics. Now reduced to an area no larger than 17 meters square, surrounded by office buildings and restaurants. The sculpture has lost it's significance!

The Irony

As a concrete jungle with canyons of meaningless void take over the little green space left in Sydney. A lone saviour sells an escape! I'm in two minds about the true intensions.

I had to laugh, and also slightly annoyed that my only option of photographing was with my 85mm lens. The images of the excavators reminded me of worker ants scurrying around to supply their queen who is busy producing new offspring. There were more excavators in a spireling line leading up the hill of rubble.
